I found an old guitar - is it worth reviving?
My workshop often receives instruments discovered years later in an attic or closet. Their owners often want to revisit their former passion or pass on the guitar to the next generation. I approach each such case with great understanding and heart – I know perfectly well that the emotional value of such an instrument can be priceless.
In most cases, a guitar that has been unused for years can be restored to full playability, although this requires a professional diagnosis. Below, I present the key factors that determine whether an old instrument can be revived and why it’s worth bringing it in for a checkup.
1. General technical condition
Whether an old instrument will experience a renaissance depends on its construction and the conditions it has been in:
Acoustic and classical guitars: The most common problems after years are a bulging top, a loose bridge, and an incorrect neck angle, which results in a very high string action that prevents comfortable play.
Electric guitars: Without a moisture-sensitive soundboard, they withstand the passage of time better. However, the hardware can be a challenge: the screws, bridge, and electronics corrode and tarnish with age (even if the instrument has been left untouched), requiring cleaning or replacement.
Frets and fingerboard: Frets that are worn or protruding from the fingerboard are common. They require breaking in, leveling (sanding), or complete replacement. Neglecting this component leads to “wolfing” (dead notes) and string buzzing.
2. Influence of age and storage conditions
The older the instrument and the longer it has been stored in unsuitable conditions (e.g., changes in humidity, extreme temperatures), the greater the risk of developing difficult-to-remove defects. A neck sinking into the body, a severely twisted (warped) fingerboard, or loose structural components can make repair uneconomical or impossible. During a review, I can quickly assess whether a patient is suitable for resuscitation, and if not, advise on the selection of a new instrument.
3. Country of origin
The origin of an instrument is crucial when assessing the cost-effectiveness of a repair:
Brand-name and Luthier Instruments: Guitars from brands such as Gibson, Fender, Martin, Ibanez, and Japanese models from the 1970s (“lawsuit guitars”) are almost always worth restoring, not only for their market or sentimental value, but also for their inherent quality.
Budget-Friendly and Historic Instruments: In the case of older brands from the Eastern Bloc (e.g., Defil, Jolana, Musima), the cost of a full luthier service often exceeds the guitar’s market value. However, if the storage conditions have been favorable, such a guitar can still be restored to its former glory.
4. Market value vs. sentimental value
5. Construction and wood quality
Even the reputation of a reputable manufacturer doesn’t guarantee that a guitar will be easy to repair after decades spent in poor conditions. Instruments made from well-seasoned wood have a much better chance of standing the test of time and maintaining structural stability. However, there is no single rule – each case requires individual testing and evaluation in a workshop.
